The History of Robert Renzoni Vineyards & Winery
The Renzoni family’s winemaking history can be traced back to 1886, when Robert’s great grandfather Federico began working in the vineyards near Fano, a small Italian village on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. He and his father started making wine for family and friends while working in the vineyards. Federico later immigrated to America at the age of 18 and settled in Buffalo, New York.
In 1914, Federico entered into the cordial business with his brother-in-law, Romeo Battistoni, but their venture was cut short by Prohibition in 1918. After Prohibition ended in 1933, Federico and Romeo ventured into the wine distributing business, importing wines from Italy and France. During this time, they started doing business with Italian immigrants who would become famous winemakers in California, such as August Sebastiani, Lorenzo Cella, and Cesare Mondavi.
Robert’s father, Frederick, took over the family business in 1972, which was then known as Italian and French Wine Company. The wholesale wine and liquor distributorship thrived under Frederick’s leadership, covering all of Upstate New York. In 1989, Robert joined the business and worked there for five years before the family made the decision to exit the wholesale business and sell it in 1994.
In 1996, Robert moved to California and worked in the wine and liquor industry in Los Angeles. In 2004, the family was reunited in Temecula when Robert and his parents moved there. They purchased a beautiful property on De Portola Road and expanded the vineyards in 2006. The Robert Renzoni Vineyards & Winery stands as a testament to the family’s dedication to winemaking and their desire to continue the traditions passed down through the generations.
Importing Wines from Italy and France
During Prohibition, Federico and Romeo’s business ventures were put on hold. However, once Prohibition ended in 1933, they resumed their wine operations. They began importing wines from Italy and France and formed partnerships with Italian immigrants who had settled in California, many of whom went on to become renowned winemakers. This collaboration helped bring the flavors and traditions of Italy and France to California’s winemaking scene and contributed to the growth of the industry in the region.
Robert Renzoni’s Entry into the Family Business
Robert Renzoni officially joined the family business in 1989, spending five years working in various roles. His experience culminated in a position in the sales department, where he developed a deep understanding of the wine industry. In 1994, the family made the decision to exit the wholesale business, prompting Robert to explore new opportunities in California.
The Birth of Robert Renzoni Vineyard & Winery
After moving to California in 1996, Robert Renzoni decided to pursue his passion for winemaking. In 2004, the family reunited in Temecula, where they purchased a beautiful property on De Portola Road. The vineyards were further expanded in 2006, allowing the family to cultivate the finest grapes and create exceptional wines. The birth of Robert Renzoni Vineyard & Winery marked the realization of a long-held dream and the continuation of the Renzoni family’s winemaking legacy.
